What are Blackheads?
Blackheads are pimples that rise to the face of the skin. When a pore becomes clogged and closed, it is known as a whitehead. But when the top remains open a black dot forms.
Many people think that blackheads are dark because it is the color of dirt in the pores. The truth is that blackheads are black or dark gray because the oil and dead skin that clogs the pore “oxidizes” (turns black) when they come into contact with air.
Blackheads on the nose are common. Though they are harmless, they can be bothersome. Washing your face daily, using oil-free sunscreen, and experimenting with pore strips, retinol, or products that contain salicylic acid helps flush them out of the nose.
Get Rid of Blackheads
If it is blackheads, you may be wondering how to get rid of them in and around your nose. Here are eight options you can try, from home remedies to dermatologist advice, plus prevention tips that will help keep blackheads at bay.
- Wash your face twice a day daily and also after exercise – It is also a good idea to wash your face in the morning to remove any dirt or bacteria that may have lodged overnight. You will also need to make sure you wash your pillowcases regularly.
- Try the pore strips – We have all seen the ad that shows the smiling woman happy to remove the blackheads from her nose. The pore strips temporarily remove a layer of skin and with it often comes to the oxidized oil and dirt that make up the pimple.
However, the pore strips will not prevent the reappearance of blackheads as they do not regulate the skin’s sebum production.
- Use an oil-free sunscreen – It’s essential to use sunscreen no matter what type of skin you have: oily, dry, or sensitive.
- Exfoliate – When you think of exfoliation, you think of harsh or harsh scrubs. There are several mild chemical scrubs that you use. Look for those that have alpha and beta hydroxy acids (AHA and BHA). These can make acne more inflamed.
These are mild acids that help remove dead skin cells. They help pave the way for other products to penetrate the skin better and work more effectively.
- Apply a clay mask – Clay is a delicate ingredient whose effectiveness dates back to ancient times. Clay helps remove excess oil from your skin and helps loosen or remove dirt from clogged pores.
Clay-based face masks work more gently than pore strips, which can loosen a layer of skin. Instead, the clay penetrates the pores and can gradually remove dirt and oil.
- Charcoal masks – Charcoal is present in all kinds of products now; I have a charcoal toothbrush and for a good reason. Charcoal is an excellent detoxifier. It works deep in the pores and helps remove dirt and other impurities.
There are many excellent charcoal masks available without a prescription. Or you can buy activated charcoal tablets at the drugstore, open the lozenges, and make your mask from a mixture of bentonite clay, tea tree oil, honey, or just plain water.
- Try topical retinoids – Topical retinoids result from vitamin A, and they are available over the counter or in prescription form. Retinol increases the renewal of skin cells and can also reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
Pregnant women must avoid retinol because excessive amounts can interfere with the development of the fetus. If you are pregnant, you can try using bakuchiol or rosehip oils instead of retinol for similar effects.
- Apply salicylic acid gel – Salicylic acids can help dissolve keratin that clogs pores and causes blackheads. It is also an effective exfoliator, but we recommend using it only on areas of the body that have whiteheads or blackheads. Using it all over the body can cause salicylate poisoning.
Prevention Tips for Blackheads
Avoid self-tanners – If you are looking to reduce blackheads on your nose, it is best to avoid self-tanning on your face. It is because the product can settle into existing blackheads, making them appear darker and more prominent. Worse yet, self-tanners can further clog pores and lead to more breakouts.
Do not use too many products – Trying too many products at once can overwhelm your skin and aggravate blackheads on your nose.
Use one or two products and remember to use a moisturizer as too dry skin will produce excess oil, increasing blackheads.
